Classic Durbanville Wine Tour

Classic Durbanville Wine Tour

1 Day

The Durbanville Wine Valley is often overlooked against its older brothers in Stellenbosch and the Constantia winelands, but it’s the one place in the Northern Suburbs you can almost always enjoy a view of the Mother City’s Table Mountain while wine tasting, picnicking and exploring the lush outdoors. Home to happy clay soils, pristine views and brisk Atlantic Ocean breezes, the area produces marvellous Chardonnay, Cabernet and Merlot varieties as well as an offering of great things to do – including events and a fine day’s wining, dining and sightseeing for the whole family.

And it’s easy to find. All you need is one road – The N1 – and twenty minutes. From the city centre to the heart of one of the youngest, most vibrant wine farm areas on the Cape Peninsula, it’s a day trip with a difference.

Discovering the Durbanville winelands is a bit like popping the cork of a favourite wine –the experience is dependable, delightful and promises a few surprises.  From hill top picnics to kiddies catering, from award winning wines to vintage farm houses, from documented terroir to Table Mountain view, its hills and dales have much to discover.

The Durbanville Wine Valley consists of a unique selection of wineries, each offering the finest in wines and complemented with some of the best fine dining restaurants and intimate country kitchens in the region.

Warm hospitality, personal experiences and rich detail keep visitors returning throughout the year to the Valley.

Places of Interest

Located just beyond and North of the Cape Town city centre – around a 25-minute drive – the Durbanville Wine Route is perfectly situated on the Mother City’s urban edge. Easily accessible, but still far removed from the hub of the rat race, Durbanville is the perfect place to get lost.

Perhaps known best for its outstanding white wines – you have to sample the Sauvignon Blanc on offer – the valley also produces fantastic red wines and MCC as well as offering world class cuisine. More recently it has also begun producing some impressive craft beer on a number of farms along the route.

With 13 farms on the route there are plenty of options for those looking to discover the magic of Durbanville.

First Vineyard

The unique location of Durbanville Hills’ cellar a mere 20 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre, offers not only a spectacular view of Table Mountain and Table Bay, but also an extraordinary terroir that stabilises temperatures and eliminates extremes of heat and cold.

Although the Durbanville area is renowned for its SAUVIGNON BLANC that excels under the cool conditions where it is grown mostly on the cool south facing slopes, the range of RED WINES also benefit from the warmer valley outskirts and opposing northern slopes.

Second Vineyard

Tucked away in the heart of the Durbanville Wine Valley – a mere 20 km from Cape Town – lies Klein Roosboom Family Winery. Home to multi-award winning wines.

We love to share old stories and make new ones over a glass of wine. We invite you to be our guest and turn moments into memories on our farm. All our wine tasting caves were once fermentation tanks for wine. Some still have magical, shiny tartaric acid deposits on the walls and others have lines that show the wine levels of yesteryear.

Nestled in the heart of the Durbanville Wine Valley, 300 year-old Klein Roosboom offers the most unique wine tasting experience the Durbanville wine route has to offer.

Third Vineyard

The VOC installed more than 50 cannons on hills and mountains around the Cape to form a signal gun chain that could call the Burgher Militia to defend the Cape. This signal gun chain extended from Signal Hill, Cape Town via Durbanville to Citrusdal in the North West, Worcester in the north and via Tygerberg to Suurbraak beyond Swellendam in the east.

We still have the original Signal Gun on our farm and use this cannon and a few others that are still in good working order to fire shots on joyous occasions
